These State Historic Sites memorialize the contributions of mortal men and women who were asked by the circumstances of their times to do extraordinary things in defending the ideals of democratic freedom for all Americans. Standing as a vivid reminder to us all that freedom is not free but hard fought to the point of self sacrifice, the resting place of a beloved President and the names of thousands of Illinoisans etched in marble demand our recognition and respect.
